My name is Hilda Shangotola, and I migrated to Canada from the UK two years ago. Having lived in the UK, it was not too much of a culture shock. I also came to adapt to life in Canada and soon grew to respect the peculiarities that make Canada unique. My past experience helped me navigate the initial settling-in process, but I have still had to learn and adjust to the Canadian way of life. I’m also still discovering new things about this beautiful country.
Starting my business in Canada has been a uniquely rewarding journey. Canada’s supportive environment for entrepreneurs, with its abundance of resources and programs, has been a beacon of hope. The diverse market and open-minded consumers have allowed me to explore creative ideas and connect with people from varied backgrounds. The emphasis on growing small businesses and empowering local entrepreneurs has opened up new opportunities for me to grow my business, filling me with inspiration and hope for the future.
My journey in entrepreneurship began with the loss of my sister, who passed away from cancer. Her death sparked my passion for making a difference in people’s lives by enabling healthy eating habits. I also realised that although healthy foods comprise mostly fruits and vegetables, they do not have to be boring. I then started creating fruit and vegetable ensembles, and crafting stunning displays that were aesthetically pleasing to the eyes and nourishing to the body. In time, word spread, and I began receiving requests for my unique fruit ensembles at parties, events, and corporate gatherings. This was how Fruit Artist was born.

Looking back, I would have focused earlier on building real-life connections and networking with other entrepreneurs. I’ve learned that attending events, conferences, and local meetups is crucial in Canada, as it allows for meaningful connections and collaborations. I would have prioritized getting out there, shaking hands, and conversing with fellow business owners and potential clients. This is because building a strong network and community is vital, and it is where the real magic happens.
To women of colour who are migrants to Canada, I share a message of empowerment. Be brave and resilient, and most importantly, believe in yourself. Embrace your uniqueness and the skills you bring to the table. Feel free to ask for help, seek mentorship, and support each other. Celebrate your successes and learn from your failures. Remember, projecting your diversity is your strength, and Canada needs your perspective and talents. Keep shining, because your unique voice and experiences are invaluable.
