My family and I made the life-changing decision to move to Canada in 2019. The journey of migration and adaptation has been a profound one, filled with challenges and rewards. The culture of inclusion and celebration of diversity in Canada has made our transition feel like we belong, making the journey truly fulfilling.

Starting AfroBold has been a pivotal aspect of this transformative journey. Afrobold first started in Nigeria, and we launched the brand into the Canadian market upon relocation. Through AfroBold, we have shared the vibrant African couture with a new market, contributing to Canada’s multicultural and multifaceted culture. Moving to Canada presented both a challenge and an opportunity to reposition and relaunch AfroBold in a new market. This transition required a strategic approach: conducting thorough market research, adapting our product offerings, and connecting with a diverse client base. We leveraged this transition to

embrace new opportunities without compromising our core values. This journey has taught us the importance of resilience, adaptability, and the strength that comes from embracing change.

Aside from my entrepreneurial ventures, I’ve also built a successful career in Talent Development. My 16 years of experience in this field have allowed me to shape innovative learning programs and foster a culture of growth and excellence within organizations. Adapting my skills and experience to the Canadian workplace has made me relevant and valuable. Juggling family, business, and career has taught me the importance of work-life balance, reassuring me that it’s possible to excel in all areas of life.

To migrant women of colour, I have this to say; embracing a new country while staying true to your cultural identity can be both challenging and incredibly rewarding. It’s natural to experience challenges along the way, but remember that your unique background and experiences are invaluable assets that enrich your new community. Your heritage is a strength that can drive innovation, foster connections, and bring diverse perspectives that are deeply needed in our multicultural society. As you settle into your new environment, hold on to the qualities that make you exceptional—resilience, adaptability, and the courage to pursue your dreams. The migration journey is about adjusting to a new place and finding and creating spaces where you can thrive. Embrace the opportunities to grow personally and professionally, and be open to learning and adapting while staying connected to your roots. Seek out and build supportive networks within your community. Connect with other women of colour, mentors, and allies who can offer guidance, share experiences, and provide encouragement. These connections can be incredibly empowering and help you navigate the complexities of settling into a new country.

Remember, every success, no matter how small, is worth celebrating. Be patient with yourself during the adaptation process. Each step forward is a testament to your strength and determination. Your journey is a powerful narrative of courage and achievement. You can make a meaningful impact, and your presence here is a testament to your strength and vision. Continue to pursue your passions, advocate for yourself, and embrace the opportunities that come your way.

Go forth and continue to inspire us with your strength and resilience!
